Priorato (in Catalan, Priorat) is a Spanish denomination of origin located in the province of Tarragona, recognized with the highest quality as it is a qualified denomination of origin.
The vineyard sits on slate soils called llicorelles. It is a mountainous area with steep slopes, so the vineyard is cultivated in terraces. Its climate is mild and dry, with marked fluctuations in temperature between day and night.
In this denomination the red wine made with Carignan grape predominates, which is the key to its current wines. Red and hairy garnacha is also used. To a lesser extent, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah grapes are used. It produces wine with a garnet color, a very intense aroma, a high degree of alcohol and a dense and rich flavor, meaty and resounding. The white wine that is made uses white Grenache, Macabeo and Pedro Ximénez. Rosé wine is also made, with red garnacha, and fortified wine.
